The Rough Draft of the First Draft of History

What She Said

Auntie Lib beats me to the punch on Dennis McDonald’s outrageous and, frankly, silly attack on Congressman Rehberg for having a couple beers then being in a boat that crashed.

First of all, that was like, what? Three weeks ago? Did he just get the poll results back showing that he could acceptably feign outrage?

Second, I thought it was the Republicans who supposedly clucked their collective tongues every time someone had a little fun. Turns out that the Democrats are the priggish ones. “Oh the poor judgment…I’m horrified!”

Third, I thought it was the Republicans who are supposedly the paternalistic ones. Now Congressman Rehberg is responsible for the decisions of 20-something adults? I wonder how his staffers like being referred to like children?

How far are the Democrats willing to stretch to make this Denny Rehberg’s fault? He was a victim. Just like poor Dustin Frost who recently got out of the hospital.

A victim.

Give me a break.

Dems have seen the error of their ways.

For example, Ted Kennedy has now been sober for several weeks.

  2. Craig Moore says:

IF these “priggish” Dems really want to show concern over a travesty, then go after Obama for cutting the deal with Big Pharma, then go after the Dems that lead the effort to keep the Medicare drug amendment from passing that might have upset Obama’s deal with Pharma. Our seniors deserve better than than to be tossed under Obama’s bus. They are true victims. Rehberg is a convenient misdirection.

  3. Anonymous says:

Those dems must go into a fit when Barry O’Change sneaks out of camera view to fire up another Newport 100. I’m sure they were just as outraged at his rose garden beer meeting.

  4. This is off this subject but is ON the REAL issue of the day.

The rest of you right wing liberals getting that sick feeling deep down yet?

I know I sure have it.

  5. Mihalis says:

Always fun to see a “silly attack” on Rehberg followed up by a “silly attack” on Democrats.

  6. Ken Thornton says:

Well lets see , we took a few highly edited sting videos of a small portion of acorn offices,( funny we didn’t hear about the two offices that turned the sting couple s names over to the police) and from that we are destroying an organization with 700 workers whoses purpose is to help the poor. Its like we took a picture as evidence and and then put every body in acorn in the same boat. hmmm,

Here is what we know from another picture and a couple of news articles. A 22 foot boat full of drunk republicans ended up with the bow about 40 feet up a steep rocky shore at about 10:00 at night going home from a party. Well they might not have been drunk just really stupid and negligent. The photo reminds me of when you see a photo in the paper of where a car full of drunks is wrapped around a tree. You feel sorry for the guys but you think, thank God t hey didn’t run in to a car full of kids. Thats what you should feel when you see this photo. You see, what the photo tells us is that it was so dark these republicans couldn’t even see the shore they ran head on into. Now , I beleave the party was in Lakeside and the boat crashed at Wayfairers state park. That puts the route they probably traveled along the westshore, going by at least three big church camps and a couple hundred lake homes. This is important because from experience I know that in the summer it is highly likely to have kids go 50-100 feet out into the lake in rowboats and canoes at night. Anyone familiar with lakes knows this. This is especially important in the fact that the rebublicans crashed the boat at a state park where there were a lot of families camping. The fact is, there is a high probability at this location that they could of run over a canoe full of kids. This ain’t being priggish Craig , Its common sense and giving a dam about others safty. I guess that isn’ a reguirement for rebulican office holders. As for the fact that Rehbergh wasn’t driving, he still should of been able to descern how stupid it was to be traveling 40mph blind on flathead lake ,Thank God they didn’t hit a canoe full of kids.

  7. Craig Moore says:

Ken: “This ain’t being priggish Craig , Its common sense and giving a dam about others safty. ”

If throwing the seniors under the bus for political reasons is common sense, then Dems really do have mixed up sense of values.

  8. Mihalis says:

As if “Dems” have a monopoly on that type of behavior.

  9. Ayn Rand says:

Maybe Candidate McDonald should take responsibility for his mob ties, and making a tragic accident into a political ad, and for signing on to a healthcare solution, that the everyday Montanan are against. He is a hacks hack.

  10. Gregg Smith says:

Lots of plural in there, Ken. I’m pretty sure there was only one driver.

Let me get this straight, then. Whenever there is a wreck involving alcohol (maybe? probably?), all people in the vehicle are responsible? That’s a pretty broad notion of culpability, one that has not seemed to find itself into either the civil or criminal law.

Or is it only a passenger’s fault if he happens to be a politician you don’t like?

Guess I’ll have to back off Teddy Kennedy. Turns out it was Mary Jo Kopechne’s fault.

  11. Gregg Smith says:

Oh yeah, as long as you used the term “they” in the same sentence with “negligent,” you might as well explain to us what legal duty Congressman Rehberg breached.

  12. Anon says:

    Ken Thornton,
After reading your September 25 post one can only conclude that you are a complete idiot. Your grammar and writing are atrocious. You should not have left your reasoning skills and logic at the door when you put on your big floppy Dems hat. A bunch of Republicans weren’t driving the boat, one person was driving the boat. Also, please let everyone know how you concluded everyone in the boat was drunk. We would all love the wealth of your wisdom. Give us a break, you are such a good example of what is wrong with the liberal mindset and you haven’t a clue. Carry on with the next diatribe.

  13. Mihalis says:

    Gregg Smith:

Turns out it was Mary Jo Kopechne’s fault.

Wow, you people must be really glad that that happened. It’s pretty sad when you have to repeatedly go back to a 40 year old scandal focused on a man who’s already dead.

  14. Gregg Smith says:

    Repeatedly?

    And, Mihalis, nice dodge.

  15. Mihalis says:

Repeatedly. Wait, weren’t you the one pointing out the “lots of plural” earlier? You should know this.

    One
    Two
    Three
    Four
    Five
    Six

I’m sure there’s probably more, but I’m done looking them up.

Don’t get me wrong Gregg. I think that people trying to lay any kind of blame for this on Rehberg is disingenuous at best, but you continually complain when someone mentions something that Bush did a year ago, let alone 40 years ago, but are quick to bring up the Chappaquiddick Incident. Oh wait, George W. Bush would never do something like that, would he.

The fact of the matter is that no matter who it is, when someone gets behind the wheel of a car, or boat, while they’re drunk, whether they do or do not kill themselves or another person is more luck than anything else.

    Rehberg wasn’t behind the wheel.

  16. Auntie Lib says:

I just think this whole thing is so funny because McDonald wasn’t in the state way back when Mike Greeley (D-Attorney General) was making headlines. Guess that’s what happens when the candidate is a carpetbagger – short memory. Kinda goes along with his whole faux cowboy personna – he can’t recognize a pile of BS before he steps in it.

  17. Gregg Smith says:

Mihalis, the only one of those quotes you linked to that was from me was the one from this post. So, I referred to Kennedy once.

    Repeatedly?

  18. Mihalis says:

Well gosh Gregg, I would have thought that someone with your obvious understanding of plurality would have inherantly understood that when I said “you people”, I wasn’t referring to just you. Your reference merely qualified you for membership in a group. The second sentence, where I just said “you”, would have been what’s called a “simple subject”, which is something most people learn about the fifth grade, but apparently isn’t required for a law degree. In that sentence, the “you” referred to the “you people” from the previous sentence, making “you” refer to the group, and so, still plural. Since it is plural, all those quotes don’t have to come from you to make my claim of “repeatedly” accurate. So, yes, repeatedly.

  19. Steve says:

What is really amazing, is how the clown McDonald can make a stupid claim and then is promptly ignored. Just his style I guess.

  20. Mark T says:

Jesus! If it were a different band, you would all change partners and dance the same dance.

  21. Mihalis says:

How would I change partners Mark? Would I be blaming both the Democrats and the Republicans? Seems a tad unlikely.

  22. Gregg Smith says:

So, you’re just like Ken, Mihalis…it doesn’t matter who’s driving the boat. We’re all along for the ride.

  23. Mihalis says:

Gregg, I think our conversations would be a lot easier, and significantly more productive, if you’d actually read what I wrote. Allow me to quote myself: “I think that people trying to lay any kind of blame for this on Rehberg is disingenuous at best”. How does that in any way make me “just like Ken?”

  24. Ken Thornton says:

Let me try this again, My use of the phrase,(boat full of drunk republicans ) was a feeble atempt to point out the hypocracy of the right as they crucify an intire organization,ACORN, because of the actions of miniscule minority. simply put they put everybody in the same boat. Don’t you beleive ACORN and the drunk republicans deserve the same fair process of innocent till proven guilty?

Gregg, I acctually don’t think that alcohol even had that much of a roll in the crash. If I was Barcus though, I would lie to the authorities and say I had downed a bottle of scotch myself because if it wasn’t booze that caused the crash then he is a complete moron and truely needs to be kept away from motorized machinery. I gave a detailed reason of why you do not drive blind close to top speed on flathead lake, and I could expand on dangers such as big floating logs you can bairly see in the day. If all of you can’t see the logic in that then we are truely from different planets. As for Rehbergs’ culpability, have any of you ever told someone to slow down, say, on a slick mountain road when you were a passinger in the car and the driver was driving in a dangerous manner? Rehberg has pretty much said he saw nothing wrong . Its worse than booze folks , Its blaitant stubidity. THANK GOD THEY DIDN’T HIT A CANOE FULL OF KIDS.

  25. Ken Thornton says:

Anon, I sadly agree with you, my langauge skills are pittifully lacking. It’s funny though, the fact that the right elected G.W. Bush twice I thought those things must not matter to you.

  26. Gregg Smith says:

Sorry, Mihalis. Take it a step deeper. You quoted a bunch of other commenters to make me guilty of the Kennedy crap by association. Kind of like Rehberg’s guilt by passenger…

  27. Gregg Smith says:

Ken, there’s so much supposition in there, hidden by language that tries to sound reasonable. Did Rehberg not tell Barkus to slow down?

  28. Mihalis says:

    Gregg Smith:

Sorry, Mihalis. Take it a step deeper. You quoted a bunch of other commenters to make me guilty of the Kennedy crap by association. Kind of like Rehberg’s guilt by passenger…

You’re not guilty by association Gregg, you’re guilty by participation. You’re guilty because of this statement: “Guess I’ll have to back off Teddy Kennedy. Turns out it was Mary Jo Kopechne’s fault.” You weren’t standing next to someone that referenced “the Kennedy crap.” You weren’t sitting in the seat next to someone who referenced “the Kennedy crap.” You weren’t sitting in the back seat of someone’s boat who referenced “the Kennedy crap.” You did it! That’s nothing like Rehberg’s “guilt by passenger”.

I never claimed that you were the only one. Far from it, but you people (note the plural there Gregg) are still kicking Mary Jo Kopechne’s corpse after 40 years. It’s beyond pathetic. You asked once, “How long must Obama remain in office before any criticism of him is deflected with a reference to a prior, Republican president?” Based on the precedent that you and people like you have been setting, a very, very long time Gregg.

  29. Gregg Smith says:

Yawn. Ok, ok, Mihalis. You win. I’m totally and completely outblockquoted.

  30. Mihalis says:

I know I “win” Gregg. I always “win” when we have a disagreement, because you think that starting a post with “Yawn” makes real “facts” go away. I’d love to see you try that in a court room. I’m sure the judge would find it just as meaningful as I do.

  31. Steve says:

The lack of consequences for causing the death of Mary Jo Kopechne are unlikely to be matched by anything that Sen. Barcus does, and he didn’t kill anyone. Knowing the Flathead County Attorney as I do, I am sure, that if there is a hint of a crime, it will be prosecuted. Not necessarily convicted, but that is a different matter.

  32. Gregg Smith says:

I’m not trying to make any “facts” go away, Mihalis. You have to agree, though, don’t you, that going back and forth and back and forth about who said what and what we meant gets a little…well…tiresome? Sometimes we just disagree and it’s really not that fun for us or anyone else to keep bickering. So I concede.

  33. Ken Thornton says:

Gregg, The only thing I have heard Rehberg say was that he didn’t beleave that Barkus was going 40mph and that Barkus said something was wrong. If you saw were Rehberg told Barkus to slow down I would like to see that.

  34. Gregg Smith says:

My point, Ken, is that we don’t know if he did or not. You don’t like Rehberg’s politics, so you are assuming that he did not tell Barkus to slow down.

  35. Mihalis says:

    Gregg Smith:

You have to agree, though, don’t you, that going back and forth and back and forth about who said what and what we meant gets a little…well…tiresome? Sometimes we just disagree and it’s really not that fun for us or anyone else to keep bickering. So I concede.

If you’re going to “concede” Gregg, concede. Don’t do this “Yawn” bullshit, where you posture like you’re humoring an ignorant child. It’s disrespectful, disingenuous, and juvenile.

  36. Gregg Smith says:

How ’bout you close up that piehole, and stop telling me what to do. I’ll “concede” however I want, and if I am going to concede to someone as boring and tedious as you, I’ll do it with a yawn. You act like an ignorant child and I’ll humor you however I want.

  37. Mihalis says:

You put up a post like that, and call me a child? The irony is hilarious. I’ll humor you and allow you to concede. You’re right, this is getting really boring.

  38. Mihalis says:

    Piehole? What are you, 12?
