What Good Does Do-goodery Do?

One of my favorite economists is Walter Williams of George Mason University. In the face of the current “progressive” push these videos are as timely now as they were when they were made in 1982.

    Yes, we were winning the war on poverty. All the Swede’s in the world and you agree on that point, and since there’s no way of disproving that point, Natelson agrees too. That kind of logic is his specialty.

    Here’s something I heard a few weeks back that might interest you – I’ll just repeat it as I haven’t had time to do any follow-up. Apparently, the voucher system in DC has not been successful, but there is a pilot program going on to pay kids for getting good grades. Just pay them money – it goes to a savings account that cannot be accessed by anyone but the kid. The results have been immediate and impressive and positive. Kids are turning on a dime.

    So I am told. Also, the program would only work for poverty-stricken kids, as middle class and up kids already have access to cash.

    But it seems to validate your philosophy to a degree. They emphasize that the program should not be instituted until the kid as already internalized a social value system that is not hard-wired on greed, so that we don’t go around creating new Daniel Plainviews.
