The Rough Draft of the First Draft of History

Fear

We’ve been hearing for years how Bush and Cheney used fear to control the masses and get their way. Now, when Cheney again warns of the possibility of Al Qaeda attacks, the left-wing rolls out the ‘fear mongering playbook. (Here, here and here):

“There’s really no more effective weapon for a government to keep a citizenry in submission to whatever it wants than keeping the fear level as high as possible,” replied Greenwald.

Keep a citizenry in submission to whatever it wants? What, like passing trillion dollar spending package in one month’s time?  Like the daily doom and gloom tour, promising that the economy will face an “economic crisis as deep and dire as any since the days of the Great Depression” unless this spend-ulus bill is passed? (Is President Obama guaranteeing that if the bill is passed, catastrophe will be avoided?)

I have to think that a terrorist attack on the US (which has actually happened) is at least as likely as an “irreversible” recession (which has not).

Nothing to fear but the lack of fear.

“A failure to act, and act now, will turn crisis into a catastrophe.” — President Obama, yesterday.

“We have chosen hope over fear.” Obama in his inaugural address.

So what will it be? Hope over fear? Or fear over hope? Guess we’ll soon find out.

Be interesting to see how Tester and Baucus ’splain their votes. Expect a lot of Democrats will be squirming as they vote for this bill, as more and more Americans learn what’s in it: housing for hookers, frisbee courses, contraceptive programs, subsidies for beekeepers and fish producers, motorbikes for cops, a polar icebreaking ship, hybrid cars for local governments…and on and on.

Tester voted against previous bailouts. If he votes to give all this money to all these silly projects, how will he explain that?

I fear hope in all its forms.

What I fear is stimulating jobs like this one, coming with this package.

Obama’s stimulus plan makes about as much sense as an alcoholic drinking more booze to reach sobriety.

  7. Old Dog says:

I would guess that Obama’s people already have the spin machine working on the inevitable lines that they will need in a couple of years when -because of this spendulous package-we are facing new inflation, continued unemployment and even larger deficits.

    “This is all Bush’s fault…..”

  8. Gregg Smith says:

Old Dog, it already started. Didn’t you read Obama’s piece in the WaPo?

“By now, it’s clear to everyone that we have inherited an economic crisis as deep and dire as any since the days of the Great Depression.”

    [Emphasis mine]

  9. Ed Kemmick says:

Gregg: If it wasn’t inherited, what date would you give for its inception? Jan. 20? Jan. 21? That seems like a pretty simple, irrefutable statement.

  10. Gregg Smith says:

No, Ed. You make a legitimate point. I am not trying to suggest that the problem began when Obama took office.

I guess the real issue, for me, is the definition of “we.” Does he mean his administration? Fair enough, although he was also a Senator.

Does he mean the Democrat party? I don’t agree that the party “inherited” anything.

Thank you for the clarity, though. I shouldn’t be so careless.

  11. Knight 1 says:

Ed Kemmick asked coyly, “If it wasn’t inherited, what date would you give for its inception?”

Answer: November, 2006, when the Democrats took over Congress.

It’s been all downhill since then, with a drastic downward acceleration in November, 2008, when the Democrats took over the White House.

  12. Ed Kemmick says:

    Better coy than wrong.

  13. Knight 1 says:

Put up and stop playing word games.

  14. Ed Kemmick says:

I only “put up” when asked by real people, not figments of the Internet’s imagination.

  15. Knight 1 says:

The only figment we have here is your lame excuse for being unable to defend your position.

    Checkmate.

  17. Rob Natelson says:

“There’s really no more effective weapon for a government to keep a citizenry in submission to whatever it wants”

So how can Cheney credibly be accused of this now since he is OUT OF POWER? If anything, he’s helping the Obaministration.

  18. Rob Natelson says:

One of the blogs Gregg referenced above calls itself “Talk Left …The Politics of Crime.” I’m often critical of the Left, but I really don’t think they should be THAT hard on themselves.
