Check this out. The latest guilt-by-association smear will leave a stain on McCain too. (You guys have no ‘won’t go there, won’t do that’ point, do you.)
In regards to Khalidi, however, the guilt-by-association game burns John McCain as well.
During the 1990s, while he served as chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI), McCain distributed several grants to the Palestinian research center co-founded by Khalidi, including one worth half a million dollars.
A 1998 tax filing for the McCain-led group shows a $448,873 grant to Khalidi’s Center for Palestine Research and Studies for work in the West Bank. (See grant number 5180, “West Bank: CPRS” on page 14 of this PDF.)
The relationship extends back as far as 1993, when John McCain joined IRI as chairman in January. Foreign Affairs noted in September of that year that IRI had helped fund several extensive studies in Palestine run by Khalidi’s group, including over 30 public opinion polls and a study of “sociopolitical attitudes.”
Two points conveniently omitted by the quoted article: Senator McCain may have been the chairman, but he wasn’t the entire board. Notice how there’s no mention of McCain’s personal vote on the grant? Also, please note the dates were pre-9/11. We didn’t have the knowledge of these groups at that time that we have now.
Thanks for sharing the Axelturf, Mark, but Alan Colmes trotted it out last night already. (He must get the talking points first, ’cause he’s more important than you.) Doesn’t matter – that grass won’t grow.
I don’t actually see a problem with the L.A. Times keeping its word to its source. In my world, keeping your word is a good thing. If there is a legal basis for disclosure, put it before a court for resolution.
I am more concerned about the candidates’ – specifically Obama’s and Palin’s -refusal to release their own medical records.
The whole guilt by association smears seem fairly tangential to me in any event.
Auntie Lib: You told me three things: One, you’re willing to condemn Obama without evidence; you are willing to exonerate McCain in spite of evidence, and finally, that you get your news from FOX.
All that leads me to believe you’re a mindless partisan. I’m moving on.
I don’t have a big problem with the LA Times honoring the agreement not to release the video, if they really had one. But here’s an easy way to satisfy — or almost satisfy — everyone. Release a full transcript of what is on the video. The fact that they have n’t done it tells us that they may have ulterior motives, doesn’t it? Because as they explain it, the agreement was only that they would not release the video.
Also, I don’t watch Hannity and Colmes very often, but I was flipping thru channels tonite when I landed on the show and they were talking about an obscure book that Ayers and his wife wrote back in the 70s called “Prairie Fire,” I believe. What was shocking, at least to me, was that it was dedicated to Sirhan Sirhan, among others. I don’t understand why so many Democrats have come to the defense of people who salute the killer of Robert F. Kennedy.

Thanks, Mark, for sharing that.
See…the republic did not collapse with the sharing of that information.
Now, maybe the LA Times could share the videotape of Obama, huh?

Oh, yes, that’s Mark T(rotsky), always moving on. Gets his ass bit and moves on…
