Canadians to close border at Whitetail, even as U.S. port gets huge pork-fueled upgrade
This is a fitting coda to an absolutely ridiculous use of government money. Readers will recall Jon Tester used his influence to get $15 million for a border upgrade to nowhere. Ridicule followed in the national media and even from locals of Daniels County, virtually all of whom seem to regard an upgrade to the Whitetail border crossing (which sees something like an average of three cars per day) as an absolutely frivolous waste of money. Now it appears we’ll be upgrading a border crossing which does not have a Canadian counterpart on the other Incidentally, there is another border crossing just about 10 miles away as the crow flies, which will remain open.

Aaron Flint mentioned that he received an eMail about this on this AM’s Voices of Montana.
Ol’ Jon is bringing home the bacon. This is part of “putting America Back to Work.” Hope it has a America Reinvestment and Recovery Act sign platered on it.
Ol’ Jon is bringing home the bacon! He’s doing what he was sent to DC to do. Don’t you know, this is part of “putting America Back to Work.” Hope it has a America Reinvestment and Recovery Act sign plastered on the side of it.
Ya know, can’t help thinking back to the 2006 election, when the rallying cry for Dems/media was “Fire Burns”.
The ‘reasoning’ supposedly was that he was Mr Pork Barrel.
Oh, and he was ‘corrupt’ because he reported campaign donations from tribes–unlike various and sundry Dem politicians, who knew tribal donations were shielded, under McCain-Feingold, from FEC reporting requirement. So I wonder how much Tester was paid to “use his influence” for the Whitetail boondoggle?
Or, maybe the better question might be: who was on the receiving end of the $15 mil? Has anyone followed the money to find out who ultimately benefits from this project?
What political ties might Mr Empty Suit have with those responsible for planning/promotion/construction of the “gate to nowhere”?
Inquiring minds wanna know.
It will no longer be called the Whitetail border crossing—it is now being called the White elephant crossing….
It would be right to point out that Canada does not require passport for admission to US citizens, and yet the US of A does require such for readmission into the US. That alone would require an upgrade to any border crossing, thanks to the fear-fueled Patriot Acts I & II. I would simply appreciate it if Jon would do what he claimed to desire to do and repeal the BS of our nationalized panic.
Wulfgar, I am in total agreement… so long as we can profile the terrorists!
Bass-ackwards.
Don’t you have to convict them of terrorism first? You know, that whole rule of law thing?
The bass I fish seem to like various baits. Ackwards never work!
They caught one of those SOB’s coming from Canada into WA state without any convoluted process. He had evil intentions. http://www.seattlepi.com/attack/56447_needle30ww.shtml
If I am driving any type of motor vehicle, I can simply drive up to the border and cross in either direction. If I am flying my airplane, I must electronically file a manifest listing all persons in the aircraft plus a lot of information about each at least one hour before crossing the border EITHER DIRECTION to US Customs! And, you must be precise in your time of arrival to the US border station on your return!
Drive and they don’t care…… Fly and they want to check your shorts BOTH WAYS !
Is there anyway to get The Flint Report added to the Dextra Feed?
Save it for the Governor’s race, Travis.
Speaking of the Flint Report:
Tester, in a prepared statement, says he spoke with Customs Commissioner Alan Bersin about the closure.
“Commissioner Bersin and I had a good talk,” Tester said. “We discussed the need to take a timeout to get public input given Canada’s decision. This allows us to figure out what’s next in a way that’s right for trade in northeast Montana and for our security needs, in a way that’s careful about spending taxpayer dollars. I’m looking forward to continuing to work with folks in Phillips County, Commissioner Bersin and the Canadian government to make sure this gets done right.”

Jon, you can stop at most any convenience store in Montana and pick up a highway map that will show which county the Port of Whitetail is in….
